South Berwick

Town in southwestern Maine, on the Salmon Falls River, opposite Dover, New Hampshire; population (1990) 5,900. It includes the Powder House and Spring Hill ski areas. Textile and shoe manufacturing are the main industries.

South Berwick is the birthplace of the US novelist and short-story writer Sarah Orne Jewett. Jonathan Hamilton House (1788) and Berwick Academy (1791) are here.
