South Boston

South Boston

Area of east-central Boston, Massachusetts, across Fort Point Channel from the city centre. Its older quarter is a residential community, heavily Irish. City Point and Castle Island extend to the east. The northern part of South Boston, built on landfill, includes much of Boston's industrial dockland.

It became part of Boston in 1804, having previously been part of Dorchester.

South Boston

Independent city in, but administratively separate from, Halifax County, south Virginia, 45 km/28 mi northeast of Danville, on the Dan River; population (1990) 7,000. In an agricultural area, it processes tobacco, flour, and timber, and is a railway junction.
