South Gate

City in southwestern California, 11 km/7 mi southeast of central Los Angeles and immediately east of Watts; population (1990) 86,300. Its products have included cars and car and aircraft parts, a range of industrial and other machinery, paint, tiles, furniture, chemicals, clothing, glass products, and electronic equipment. The city is predominantly Hispanic.

Incorporated in 1923, it grew quickly after World War II as part of the industrial district that includes neighbouring Huntington Park, Bell, and Maywood.

South Gate

Residential suburb in central Maryland, 19 km/12 mi south of central Baltimore, and just southeast of Baltimore-Washington International Airport; population (1990) 27,600. The area is developing rapidly.
