South Hadley

Town in western Massachusetts, in Hampshire County 19 km/12 mi north of Springfield, on the Connecticut River, with the Holyoke Range to the north; population (1990 est) 16,700. Papermaking and farming are the principal industries. The town is a residential community for Springfield, Massachussetts, and was incorporated in 1775.

South Hadley was founded in the late 17th century and developed slowly. By the 19th century it had several types of milling operations and a tannery. The town is the site of the USA's first navigable canal (1795) and is the seat of Mount Holyoke College (1837), the USA's oldest continuing institution of higher education for women.

The town has three entries on the National Register of Historic Places including a post office.
