South Haven

City in southwestern Michigan, on Lake Michigan at the mouth of the Black River, 60 km/37 mi northwest of Kalamazoo; population (1990) 5,600. A lake port and resort, it also has commercial fishing, processes and ships blueberries and fruit, and produces pianos and baskets.

It is the birthplace of the US botanist, horticulturist, and educator Liberty Hyde Bailey. Michigan State College has a horticultural experimental station here. The Lake Michigan Maritime Museum has a 183-m/600-ft-long boardwalk displaying historic craft.
