South Lake Tahoe

City in northeastern California, at the southern end of Lake Tahoe, on the Nevada border, 153 km/95 mi northeast of Sacramento; population (1990) 21,600. It is the largest community on the lake and is a year-round resort.

Heavenly Valley, nearby to the east, claims to be the largest US ski area. Lake Tahoe Community College (1975) is in the city.
