South Orkney Islands

Group of barren, uninhabited islands in British Antarctic Territory, southeast of Cape Horn; area 622 sq km/240 sq mi.

They were discovered by the naval explorer Captain George Powell (1795–1824) and the US Captain Nathaniel Palmer (1799–1877) in 1821.

The mountainous islands are covered in ice and snow. They lie in the South Atlantic Ocean between 60° 20' and 60° 50' south and 44° 20' and 46° 45' west.
