South Platte

River in Colorado and Nebraska, USA; length 711 km/422 mi. It rises near Mount Lincoln on the eastern side of the Rocky Mountains in central Colorado, and flows through Denver and then northwards to Nebraska, where it unites with the North Platte and forms the Platte River. It provides irrigation water for the northern part of Colorado. Reservoirs and dams have been created for power, irrigation, and flood control.
