South Portland

City in southwestern Maine, on Casco Bay at the mouth of the Fore River, opposite Portland, of which it is a residential and commercial suburb; population (1990) 23,200. A shipbuilding centre since the 17th century, South Portland now has an oil terminal, copperworks, rolling mills, timberyards, and factories producing nylon, wire, and pipes.
