Southbridge

Town in southern Massachusetts, in Worcester County, on the Quinebaug River and the Connecticut border, 33 km/21 mi southwest of Worcester; population (2000 est) 12,900. Industries include the manufacture of optical goods and fibre optics, tools, cutlery, and textiles. It was incorporated in 1816.

Southbridge was settled in 1730, almost a century after abortive lead-mining efforts first brought Europeans into the area.

The town has 83 entries on the National Register of Historic Places including factories, churches, and historic districts.
