Southampton County

Southampton County

County in southeastern Virginia, bounded to the south by North Carolina, to the west by the Meherrin River, and to the east by the Blackwater River; area 1,562 sq km/603 sq mi; population (1990) 17,600. Its capital is Courtland. It has diverse agriculture, raising peanuts, cotton, and other products.

The slave leader Nat Turner was born in Southampton County, and in 1831 led a rebellion that attempted to take Jerusalem (now Courtland). Turner and some of his fellow rebels were executed.
