Southern Christian Leadership Conference

US civil-rights organization founded in 1957 by Martin Luther King, Jr, and led by him until his assassination 1968. It advocated nonviolence and passive resistance, and it sponsored the 1963 march on Washington, DC, that focused national attention on the civil-rights movement. Its nonviolent philosophy was increasingly challenged by militants, and it lost its central position in the movement.

The Rev Jesse Jackson began his association with the civil-rights movement with King at the SCLC.
