Southern Leyte

Southern Leyte

Province of southern Leyte Island in the Philippines; area 1,735 sq km/670 sq mi; population (1995) 318,000. The capital is Maasin. The province has a mountainous terrain. Rice, corn, bananas, root crops, coconut, sugar, and abaca (hemp) are grown. Tuna fishing is important.

The explorer and navigator Ferdinand Magellan landed on the island of Limasawa in Southern Leyte and celebrated his first Mass on Philippine soil in 1521.
