Southern Pines

Town in south-central North Carolina, 45 km/28 mi northwest of Fayetteville and just west of Fort Bragg; population (1990) 9,100. Surrounded by golf courses and other recreational facilities, it is an increasingly popular retirement area.

Located in a fruit and market gardening and timber area, it became a popular health resort in the 1880s, and was further developed in the 1920s to capitalize on the national golf craze.
