Southland

Southernmost region of South Island, New Zealand, including Stewart Island and Foveaux Strait; population (1996) 100,100. The main activities are sheep and cattle farming, forestry, and horticulture. A large exporting port is located at Bluff, which also supports a large fishing fleet, and produces cultivated oysters. The principal city is Invercargill.
