Spearfish

City in western South Dakota, on Spearfish Creek, 68 km/42 mi northwest of Rapid City and 16 km/10 mi east of the Wyoming border; population (1990) 7,000. Situated in a valley in the northern Black Hills, at the mouth of Spearfish Canyon, it is known for its scenery and is popular with tourists. It is a trade centre for the surrounding region, which produces market garden crops, grain, timber, and sugar beet.

The High Plains Heritage Museum is located in the city, as is Black Hills State University (1883). Each summer area residents perform the Black Hills Passion Play here.
