Spearman's rank

Spearman's rank

In statistics, an index of the strength of the relationship between two sets of information; for example, altitude and temperature. The value of the index varies between +1 (a perfect positive correlation) and −1 (a perfect negative correlation); 0 = no correlation.

The formula is:

R = 1 − (6 × Σd2)/(n3n)

where n is the number of pairs of data and d is the difference in rank.

As a first step to investigate correlation, a scatter diagram can be plotted, to see how near to a straight line the points lie.
