spectator ion

In a chemical reaction that takes place in solution, an ion that remains in solution without taking part in the chemical change. For example, in the precipitation of barium sulphate from barium chloride and sodium sulphate, the sodium and chloride ions are spectator ions.

BaCl2 (aq) + Na2SO4 (aq) → BaSO4 (s) + 2NaCl(aq)
