Spener, Philip Jakob (1635–1705)

German theologian and founder of Pietism. Spener was born in Rappoltsweiler, Alsace. He studied at Strasbourg, Basel, Tubingen, and Geneva, and in 1663 was appointed preacher and lecturer at Strasbourg University, later becoming pastor at Frankfurt-on-Main.
