crystal gazing

Method of divination by looking fixedly into a crystal, mirror, or pool of liquid. Visions of the future or answers to questions are supposed to appear within the crystal.

In the past, precious stones were often used, especially beryl. The operator, having muttered certain formulas over the stone, sometimes handed it to a virgin of either sex, who was then supposed to be able to reveal the future. The desired knowledge was said to be obtained by means of written characters on the crystal, or by the appearance there of the spirits invoked. The English alchemist John Dee was a practitioner of crystal gazing.
