Spiegelman, Art (1948– )

US cartoonist. He won a Pulitzer Prize in 1992 for Maus: A Survivor's Tale I: My Father Bleeds History (1986) and Maus: A Survivor's Tale II: And Here My Troubles Began (1991), graphic novels dealing with his father's experiences in Poland before and during World War II, when he was in Auschwitz concentration camp, and with Spiegelman's relationship with his father. In the comic-strip drawings, Jews are portrayed as mice.

Spiegelman was born in Stockholm, Sweden, but emigrated to the USA with his family 1951. In San Francisco during the 1970s he published cartoons in underground magazines. He founded Raw magazine, which published many well-known cartoonists, in 1980. In 1992 he began working as an artist for the New Yorker magazine. There was an exhibition of his work at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, in 1991.
