Spiro

City in east-central Oklahoma, 89 km/55 mi southeast of Muskogee and 16 km/10 mi west of the Arkansas border, near the Arkansas River; population (1990) 2,100. It gins cotton and is a processing centre for potatoes, corn, and other crops.

It was founded in the mid-1890s close to the military post Fort Coffee (1834). Nearby, to the east, is an archaeological park containing nine mounds built about.1200–1350, during the Mississippian culture.
