Spithead

Spithead

Partly sheltered anchorage in the English Channel between the mainland of England and the Isle of Wight. It is part of the Solent.

In 1545 a battle was fought here between the English and French fleets in which the French were defeated. Spithead has been the scene of many Royal Navy reviews.
