Spitta, (Julius August) Philipp (1841–1894)

German musicologist. He was joint editor with Guido Adler and Friedrich Chrysander of the Vierteljahrsschrift für Musikwissenschaft, and edited the complete works of Schütz and the organ works of Buxtehude. His chief literary work is his book on Bach in two volumes (1873–80).

He studied at Göttingen University and in 1875 became professor of music history at Berlin University. He also taught the subject at the Hochschule für Musik, of which he became director in 1882.
