Split

Port in Croatia, on the Adriatic coast; population (2001) 188,700. Industries include engineering, cement, and textiles.

Split was bombed during 1991 as part of Yugoslavia's blockade of the Croatian coast.

The Roman emperor Diocletian retired here in 305.
