Spottiswoode, John

Spottiswoode, John (1565–1639)

Scottish archbishop. On the death of Archbishop James Beaton, he was appointed to the see of Glasgow. He was moderator of the General Assembly (1610, 1616, and 1617) and of the Perth Assembly (1618), which sanctified the five articles of Perth. In 1615 he was transferred to the see of St Andrews, Scotland. He crowned Charles I at Holyrood House in 1633. In 1635 he was made chancellor of Scotland.

Spottiswoode was born in Calder, Scotland. He was educated at the University of Glasgow. His publications include History of the Church of Scotland (1655) and the Latin treatise, Refutatio libelli de regimine ecclesiae Scoticanae (1620).
