Springdale

Town in Washington and Benton counties, northwest Arkansas; population (1990) 29,900. It is located 9 mi/14 km north-northeast of Fayetteville, on the Ozark Plateau, and lies to the northwest of Little Rock. Settled in 1850, the town developed as an agricultural shipping center after the arrival of the railroad in 1881. The surrounding area produces grapes, peaches, apples, strawberries, wine, vinegar, eggs, and poultry. Trucking, light manufacturing, and tourism augment the town's economy. The Albert E Brumley gospel music festival is held in Springdale.
