Springer, Axel (1912–1985)

German publisher. His publishing group controlled a number of West German newspapers and periodicals during the Cold War period. The Springer group publishes books, magazines, and such newspapers as Die Welt, Bild Zeitung, Berliner Morgenpost, and Welt am Sonntag; it also produces programmes for radio and television.

Springer was born in Altona, Germany. His father owned the Altonauer Nachtrichen on which he trained as a journalist before setting up his own company in 1945.
