Springhill

Town in north-central Nova Scotia, Canada, in the Chignecto isthmus, 24 km/15 mi southeast of Amherst; population (1991) 4,400. It has natural springs and a penitentiary, but the town is best known for its long and tragic mining history.

Once the site of the deepest mine in Canada, it was a coal centre from the 1830s through the 1950s, when the mines closed after the last (1958) of a series of fires and explosions; the Miners' Museum details the story.

The Anne Murray Centre honours the career of the singer, who was born here in 1945.
