Springs

City in Gauteng Province, South Africa, 40 km/25 mi east of Johannesburg; population (2007 est) 190,800. It is a mining centre, producing gold, coal, and uranium. Industries include the manufacture of alloy steels and non-ferrous products, paper making, cycles, sheet glass, electrical goods, and mining machinery. An annual Eisteddfod is held here.
