Squamish

District municipality in southwestern British Columbia, Canada, at the head of Howe Sound and the mouth of the Squamish River, 48 km/30 mi north of Vancouver; population (1991) 11,700. It is a seaport and railway terminus in a diversified mining region. Industries include hydroelectric production and pulp and timber milling.

It was settled in 1888 as a hop-farming and logging town. Squamish Chief (or Stawamus Chief), a granite monolith 762 m/2,500 ft high, attracts rock climbers. Garibaldi Provincial Park, the Whistler ski resorts, and other recreational attractions are nearby.
