Sri Jayewardenepura Kotte

Legislative and judicial capital of Sri Lanka (from 1982), lying 10 km/6 mi from Colombo; population (2001 est) 127,000. Kotte was the capital of a Sinhalese kingdom from 1415 to 1565, when it was replaced by Colombo, of which it is now a suburb. Located in a low-lying area of Western Province, formerly a swamp, the town was easy to defend because of the surrounding rivers, marshes, and lagoons. Today there are still a number of plantations and rice paddies, though the area is now mainly urbanized.

The University of Sri Jayewardenepura (1959) has become one of Sri Lanka's leading institutions of higher education.
