Srinagar

Summer capital of the state of Jammu and Kashmir, India, on the Jhelum River, 1,600 m/5,250 ft above sea level; population (2001) 894,900. It is a beautiful resort, intersected by waterways and wooden bridges, with numerous mosques, palaces, a fortress, and public gardens. Lake Dal to the northeast is an important tourist centre. It has carpet, papier mâché, silk, silver, and leather industries. The university of Jammu and Kashmir was established in 1948.

Since the late 1980s the tense political situation provoked by a separatist campaign has seriously reduced tourist activity.
