Srirangam

Town in Tamil Nadu state, southeast India; population (1991) 69,900. It is situated on an island in the Cauvery River about 100 km/60 mi from the sea, part of the urban agglomeration of Tiruchchirappalli. A Hindu pilgrimage centre, the temple dedicated to Vishnu is one of the largest in the country. The town is surrounded by seven concentric walled courtyards, with magnificent gateways and many shrines.
