Alban, St (lived 3rd century)

First Christian martyr in England. In 793 King Offa founded a monastery on the site of Alban's martyrdom, around which the city of St Albans grew up. His feast day is 20 June.

Named after England's first martyr saint, the stunning nearby church of St Alban the Martyr dominates the corner of Stanhope Street.
Byline: By Denise Robertson Some 1,750 years ago St Alban was beheaded for avowing his faith.
