St Albans| Residential area of New York City, in eastern Queens. To the east of Jamaica and south of Hollis, close to the Nassau County border, it is a semi-suburban, largely black, middle-class neighbourhood. |
St Albans| City and administrative headquarters of Franklin County, northwest Vermont, on St Albans Bay of Lake Champlain, 39 km/24 mi north of Burlington; population (1990 est) 7,300. It is surrounded by St Albans town (population (1990 est) 4,600). The city is a railway and manufacturing centre and port of entry. Local industries make maple, dairy, metal, wood, and paper products, along with poultry and cattle feed, sugarmaking equipment, batteries, and canned goods. |
History The community was an early-19th-century smugglers' base, and a refuge for French-Canadian rebels during the 1837 Papineau War. In October 1864, it was the site of a Confederate bank raid constituting the most northerly engagement of the American Civil War. In 1866 St Albans was a gathering point for Irish Fenians before an abortive invasion of Canada. |
