St Albans

Residential area of New York City, in eastern Queens. To the east of Jamaica and south of Hollis, close to the Nassau County border, it is a semi-suburban, largely black, middle-class neighbourhood.

St Albans

City and administrative headquarters of Franklin County, northwest Vermont, on St Albans Bay of Lake Champlain, 39 km/24 mi north of Burlington; population (1990 est) 7,300. It is surrounded by St Albans town (population (1990 est) 4,600). The city is a railway and manufacturing centre and port of entry. Local industries make maple, dairy, metal, wood, and paper products, along with poultry and cattle feed, sugarmaking equipment, batteries, and canned goods.

History

The community was an early-19th-century smugglers' base, and a refuge for French-Canadian rebels during the 1837 Papineau War. In October 1864, it was the site of a Confederate bank raid constituting the most northerly engagement of the American Civil War. In 1866 St Albans was a gathering point for Irish Fenians before an abortive invasion of Canada.

St Albans

The Battle of Scary Creek, a Confederate victory in the American Civil War, was fought to the northwest on 17 July 1861.
