St Albans

City in western West Virginia, at the junction of the Coal and Kanawha rivers, 19 km/12 mi west of Charleston; population (1990 est) 11,200. It is in a coal and natural gas producing and farm area; many residents work at nearby chemical plants.

The Battle of Scary Creek, a Confederate victory in the American Civil War, was fought to the northwest on 17 July 1861.
