St Albert

City in central Alberta, Canada, on the Sturgeon River, adjoining Edmonton, and 23 km/14 mi northwest of its centre; population (1991) 42,100. An agricultural service centre for farms north of Edmonton, it has experienced increasing residential development in recent decades.

The community was founded in 1861 by a missionary and later attracted Métis settlers (descendants of French Canadians and Native North Americans). The local bridge was the first in western Canada, and the original chapel still stands.
