Anselm, St (c. 1033–1109)

Italian priest and philosopher. He was born in Piedmont and educated at the abbey of Bec in Normandy, which, as abbot from 1078, he made a centre of scholarship in Europe. He was appointed archbishop of Canterbury by William II of England in 1093, but was later forced into exile. He holds an important place in the development of scholasticism. Feast day 21 April.

In his Proslogion he developed the ontological proof of theism, which infers God's existence from our capacity to conceive of a perfect being. His major work, Cur deus homo?/Why did God become Man?, treats the subject of the Atonement. He was canonized 1494.
