St Bees

Village on the west coast of Cumbria, northwest England; population (2001) 1,700. It was the site of a medieval abbey of which the church survives. The village is separated from Whitehaven by St Bees Head, a headland with extensive views.

St Bees is reputed to be named after an Irish woman saint. It has a private school for boys founded as a grammar school in the 16th century.
