Cecilia, St (lived 2nd or 3rd century AD)

Christian patron saint of music. She was martyred in Rome, Italy, and is said to have sung hymns while undergoing torture. Her feast day is 22 November.

There are many compositions in her honour; for example, Henry Purcell's Ode on St Cecilia's Day (1692) and Benjamin Britten's Hymn to St Cecilia (1942).
