St Clair, Arthur

    0.02 sec.

St Clair, Arthur (1738–1818)

Scottish-born American soldier and public official. He served with the Continental forces at Trenton and Princeton; his withdrawal from Fort Ticonderoga without a battle in 1777 drew heavy criticism. He was a Pennsylvania delegate to the Confederation Congress 1785–87 and its president in 1787. As governor of the Northwest Territory 1787–1802, he commanded the army that was soundly defeated near Fort Wayne by a group of Miami Indians in 1791.

He was born in Thurso, Scotland. He resigned from the British army in 1762 and settled in western Pennsylvania.
