Cyril of Alexandria, St (376–444)

Bishop of Alexandria from 412, persecutor of Jews and other non-Christians, and suspected of ordering the murder of Hypatia (c. 370–c. 415), a philosopher whose influence was increasing at the expense of his. He was violently opposed to Nestorianism.
