St Francisville

Town in south-central Louisiana, on the east bank of the Mississippi River, 42 km/26 mi northwest of Baton Rouge; population (1990) 1,700. It is a river port and trade centre. Cotton, sweet potatoes, and other crops are grown locally. Rosedown Plantation (1835) and other pre-Civil War sites draw visitors.

A 1785 Capuchin monastery here gave its name to the town. In 1810 it was briefly the capital of the West Florida republic. The River Bend nuclear power plant (1985) is nearby.
