St George

City and administrative headquarters of Washington County, in the southwest corner of Utah, 80 km/50 mi southwest of Cedar City and 13 km/8 mi north of the Arizona border; population (2000) 49,700. The city is surrounded by poultry and produce farms and gold, copper, and iron mines. A commercial and tourist centre, it is a gateway to Dixie National Forest and Zion National Park.

It was settled in 1861 by Mormons, who were sent to this warm area to grow cotton. Utah's first Mormon temple (1877), an 1863 tabernacle, the Jacob Hamblin Home (1863), and the Brigham Young Winter Home (1873) draw visitors to the city, which is also the seat of Dixie College (1919) and the Dixie Regional Medical Center, a major employer.
