St Helens, Mount

Volcanic mountain in Skamania County, Washington. It is located on the western flank of the Cascade Range, 56 km/35 mi east of Kelso, in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest. Dormant since 1857, it erupted on 18 May 1980, devastating an area of 600 sq km/230 sq mi, and killing 57 people; its height was reduced from 2,950 m/9,682 ft to 2,560 m/8,402 ft. The Mount St Helens National Volcanic Monument now surrounds the peak.
