Hilda, St (or St Hild) (614-680)

English abbess. She was related to the Northumbrian royal family and for 22 years she was abbess of the double monastery for monks and nuns at Whitby (Streoneshalh), England, which she founded in 658. The Christian poet Caedmon lived in her care. Her feast is on 17 November.
