St James's Palace

Palace in London, England. It was commissioned by Henry VIII in 1530 on the site of a hospital for leprous women founded at about the time of the Norman Conquest. Of Henry's palace only the imposing gateway survives, since much was destroyed by fire in 1809. It became the official residence of the sovreign from 1698, after Whitehall Palace was destroyed by fire, until 1837 when Queen Victoria chose Buckingham Palace.

The British Court is still officially styled ‘the Court of St James’; the palace is now used for apartments for court officials. St James's Park (enlarged by Charles II) formed the palace grounds.

Charles I spent his last night here. Adjacent is the Queen's Chapel, built by Inigo Jones (1623–27).
