St Joseph County

County in northern Indiana, bounded to the north by Michigan; area 1,189 sq km/459 sq mi; population (1990) 247,100. Its capital is South Bend. The county is largely agricultural; grain, fruit, and mint are major crops. The souther part has lake resorts. There is extensive and diversified manufacturing in the South Bend–Mishawaka area.
